When Did They Become Republicans?

Nancy Pelosi has promised to impose a pay-as-you-go spending rule within the first 100 hours of her leadership, which means that any new tax cuts or spending increases must be offset by spending cuts or tax increases. I’m sorry, I couldn’t possibly have heard that correctly.

The democrats gave us deficit spending. They had no problem whatsoever racking up deficit after deficit for decades. Debt was good. They raided Social Security with impunity, all the while squirreling away their retirement money in private accounts, both of which are why Social Security is going broke. And, suddenly, they’re fiscal conservatives?

Don’t believe it for one second. Some time after her first 100 days, or sooner, we’re going to hear the democrats, in somber and funereal tones, tell us that America’s finances are in too bad a shape. We’re going to hear about how the profligate spending on the part of Republicans has bankrupted this country. Then we’re going to hear that taxes have to be raised. No only are taxes going to have to be raised, spending is going to have to be increased because the Republicans didn’t spend the money “wisely.” They wasted the money on the war in Iraq while everything here went to hell in a hand basket. Serious fiscal handling will be needed.

Charles Schumer will take to the Sunday morning shows in that oh-so serious voice he likes to use when talking to the masses. John Kerry will pontificate from on high. Hillary Clinton will tell us how they’re going to take from “each according to his ability” and give to “each according to his need.” All will speak slowly because, let’s face it, they think we’re just too stupid to know what’s going on.

They’re going to make sure that by this time next year, we’re paying higher taxes and higher prices at the pump. Dig deep, everyone, Uncle Sam needs you! .

Any time you might be tempted to think that the democrats are actually competent to run this country, remember this: John Kerry and John Edwards.
